Dance Deforestation Away

On June 21st, 2020, Rainforest Foundation held a virtual concert called SOS Rainforest Live to raise awareness for the indigenous communities of the Amazon Rainforest. These people are currently battling the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, while simultaneously trying to save the forest they call home. Deforestation in the rainforest has been a huge threat to the survival of these people.

It may not seem like it, but the Covid-19 pandemic has only made protecting the Amazon Rainforest more difficult. I think it is important to remember that there is a domino effect when it comes to saving the rainforest from deforestation. Without its native people, the rainforest faces an unknown fate. It is important to also keep these people safe and healthy as they continue the fight against deforestation.

While I did not have the chance to watch the event live, I have found it very interesting to read and learn about. The Rainforest Foundation was able make this a fun and exciting event for anyone who wanted to get involved. Even though this event occurred several months ago, I think it is still important to be informed about.

Check it Out

This six hour long event featured performances from Sting, Iwan Fals, Manu Chao, Aurora, and many other performers. Other participants included presenters Oona Chaplin, Letícia Sabatella, and Camlia Pitanga. There was also representation from the indigenous people of the forest, including leaders Sonia Guajajara and Emanuelle Peni. Since this was a virtual event, performers and participants videoed in from different locations around the world to take part in the event.

Time to Dance

What I think was the coolest part of this event was the #SOSRainforestChallenge dance challenge. Viewers were encouraged to film a short video of themselves dancing and post it on the social media app TikTok, using the hashtag #SOSRainforestChallenge. For every video posted with the hashtag, TikTok pledged to make a donation to the SOS Rainforest Live event. I found this to be a brilliant way to include younger people in the event, allowing them a fun and creative way to help the cause. It also helped bring more attention to the event itself.

Still Want to Help?

If you are like me and missed the event, there are still ways to help. Consider making a donation directly to the Rainforest Foundation. Donations go towards their efforts to help protect the rainforest from destruction. For more information, visit their website at https://rainforestfoundation.org/.
